December 2009

Early VAT payment

A large number of you have already taken the opportunity to pay for your next year’s moorings at the current lower VAT rate. As you are aware, the VAT rate is due to increase again on the 1st of January 2010 back to 17½%. However, you are able to benefit from the existing VAT rate of 15% for all mooring invoices raised and paid before the end of 2009.

This applies regardless of how long the period is for, when it commences, or when it ends. The only stipulation is that the invoice must be raised, dated, and paid in full prior to the 31st of December 2009.

For example, if your current annual mooring contract ends on 31st of March 2010, you have the opportunity to pay early for your new annual contract at the lower 15% VAT rate and at the 2009 price, as long as the invoice is raised and paid in full before the 31st of December 2009. You also have the option to pay for longer periods at the same annual tariff and at the lower VAT rate.

However, we must point out as usual that no refunds can be made after such payments have been made. It is also important to remember that if you are paying annually in advance for the period commencing 1st of January 2010 that we receive payment before the 31st of December 2009, to avoid paying the higher monthly tariff and the higher VAT rate.

Please do not hesitate to contact the marina office on 01932 226305 or waltonmarina@tingdene.net for further details or clarification.

Please note that the marina office will close for business on the 22nd of December 2009 for the Christmas holidays, so this will be the effective deadline for payment at the lower VAT rate.

Chandlery

With Christmas only around the corner, a lot of people are wondering what to buy their nearest and dearest. Well, what about a gift voucher from Walton Marina Chandlery? As it happens we are now offering gift vouchers from as little as £5 to £50. Whilst we are on the subject of gifts for the boater, we are now the proud stockists of Henri Lloyd clothing on the lower Thames and will be stocking all their latest seasonal wear. Also for those of you who are missing the coffee mornings, we are now selling tea, coffee and hot chocolate so if you are working out in the cold on your boat this winter, come in and see us for a hot drink to warm you up.

Electric leads and hoses

When you plug into the electric supply we ask that you make sure that your electric lead does not come in contact with the water. We hate to state the obvious but electricity and water do not go together and we have had to pull a couple of leads that were fully immersed, out off the water.

We also ask that when you are finished using the hoses that you leave them neat and tidy and please do not leave them hanging in the water.

Codes by text

We are looking into the possibility of sending you the monthly gate code in a text message on the day that they change. This means that you can store the number and then you don’t have to rely on having the gate code card with you. If this is something you are interested in, please email waltonmarina@tingdene.net with the numbers that you would like to receive the code. Will hope to start this when the code changes for the first time in April 2010 but we will remind you again in the March 2010 newsletter.

Work in progress

During January and February we plan to refurbish the toilet facilities. There will be a time when one of them will be closed but we will try to keep the disruption to a minimum and apologise in advance for any inconvenience this might cause.

Winterising

As the weather turns colder, there are a few important issues that marina users should consider. As you are aware, the marina does not provide a permanent shore power supply so please do not rely on this to see your boat through the winter months. Secondly, please make sure that your boat is correctly tied up with sufficient slack to accommodate any rise or fall in the river level. We will do frequent marina checks but ultimately the responsibility lies with the boat owner to adjust accordingly, especially over the Christmas period when the marina will be closed for a period of 2 weeks.

Finally, please take extra care in the marina over the winter months as snow and ice can make the pontoons extremely slippery. There are bins containing grit/rock salt for your use.

Christmas Closure

Please be advised that the marina office will close at 5pm on Tuesday 22nd December and will reopen at 9am on Saturday 2nd January.  We will be doing daily checks on the marina and will also be checking the phone messages.

BEHC Marine Trimmers will close on Wednesday 23rd December and reopen on Monday 4th January 2010.

Travel Tailor will also close on Wednesday 23rd December and reopen on Monday 4th January 2010.

The service centre will close on Tuesday 22nd December and will be open again on Monday 4th January.
